Printer Configuration Tool "KyoConf" for Linux 1.0 (for Kyocera Mita printers)

Introduction

This tool is a tiny program designed for Linux to configure Kyocera Mita printers compatible with the Prescribe IIe standard. This standard is supported by all Kyocera Mita printers of the FS series.

Kyocera ships its printers with a configuration tool named "Remote Operation Panel" which is Windows only software. Linux users may have difficulties in configuring their printer. This tool overcomes these difficulties by providing a very simple interactive dialog. Almost all options provided by Kyocera's "Remote Operation Panel" may also be configured with this Linux tool. A list of provided configuration options is given below.

However, this tool DOESNOT provide you with any feedback from the printer. It uses standard oneway communication to talk to the printer. Therefore in order to see whether your chosen printer configuration was indeed accepeted by the printer you need to print a status page. A status page may be printed by an option within the program's menu or by pressing a special button on your printer (see your printer's manual).

  • Installation Overview

Installation of the tool is trivial. Unpack the shipped archive into an own directory (command: tar -xzf kyoconf.tgz).
Then simply run the program "kyoconf" in the directory "KyoConf".
After starting the tool you need to choose the device which connects your printer. This is usually "/dev/lp0" or "/dev/lp1" if you are using a parallel connector. For serial devices this should be "/dev/ttyS0" or "/dev/ttyS1" etc. You can also use any other device, e.g. for USB connectors.
There is no need to run the program as root. All you need is write access to the device connecting your printer. If the program hangs when sending a command to the printer then make sure:
    1. The device you stated is writable by the current user. Check the write permissions of the device (e.g. ls -l /dev/lp0) and make sure it is writable by the current user.
2.Check whether your printer is actually connected to the device you stated (otherwise try /dev/lp1, /dev/lp2 etc...)
The tool does not use any fancy ECP printer port capabilities. It should work with any parallel, serial or USB connector.

Note: The configuration tool provides a number configuration features which depend on the particular printer type. If you are in doubt whether your printer does in deed support a certain configuration option then please refer to your printer's manual! E.g. only certain printers have the "KPDL (Postscript Level II)" capability etc. You should not choose a "Host Buffer Size" which exceeds your printer's physical memory etc...

Usually the printer will simply ignore configuration options which it is uncapable of. If you run into any difficulties you can always choose the "Reset to factory default" from the menu to be save. However, please note that usage of this software is on your own risk!
